US Declares Sudan's RSF Committed Genocide in Civil War
The Biden administration imposes sanctions on RSF leader and affiliated entities after systematic ethnic violence is confirmed.
- US Secretary of State Antony Blinken determined that Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied militias committed genocide, including systematic killings and sexual violence targeting specific ethnic groups.
- The RSF and its militias have been accused of murdering civilians, blocking access to essential supplies, and using rape as a weapon of war during the ongoing conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since April 2023.
- Sanctions were imposed on RSF leader Mohammad Hamdan Daglo, also known as Hemedti, barring him and his family from entering the US and targeting RSF-linked companies in the UAE for their roles in supplying weapons.
- The civil war has caused one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with tens of thousands dead, over 30 million in need of aid, and 638,000 experiencing famine, according to the US and UN estimates.
- This is the second declared genocide in Sudan in less than 30 years, following atrocities in Darfur in the early 2000s, with the RSF emerging from the Janjaweed militias responsible for those earlier crimes.
